Modified Barthel Index (MBI) Calculator

The MBI is an ordinal scale used to measure performance in activities of daily living (ADL) and mobility. It is commonly used to track functional improvement over time.

Assessment Tasks (Scoring 0-100)

Total MBI Score:
0 / 100

Score Interpretation (Detailed Data)

The total MBI score ranges from 0 (completely dependent) to 100 (fully independent). Scores are typically grouped to indicate the degree of functional impairment and the level of care required.

Functional Categories

Score RangeDependency LevelImplication
0 – 20Total DependencySevere physical impairment; requires maximal assistance.
21 – 60Severe DependencyRequires significant assistance with most daily tasks.
61 – 90Moderate DependencyAble to perform some ADLs but requires assistance for more complex tasks or transfers.
91 – 99Slight DependencyMostly independent; may require minimal help or supervision.
100Complete IndependencePatient performs all ADLs without assistance.

Task Breakdown (Points per Category)

Understanding the scoring for each activity helps accurately administer the index.

  • Transfer & Mobility (0, 5, 10, 15 pts): These are the only two tasks scored up to 15 points.
  • Grooming & Bathing (0, 5 pts): These tasks only have two options: Dependent (0) or Independent/Needs help (5).
  • Bowel, Bladder, Toilet Use, Feeding, Dressing, Stairs (0, 5, 10 pts): These six tasks are scored on a three-point scale.
