Understanding Newborn Weight Categories

Extremely Low Birth Weight (ELBW)

**Weight Range:** Less than 1,000 g (2 lb 3 oz)

**Significance:** Infants in this range require the highest level of specialized medical care, often due to extreme prematurity and associated developmental risks.

Very Low Birth Weight (VLBW)

**Weight Range:** 1,000 g to 1,499 g (2 lb 3 oz to 3 lb 4.9 oz)

**Significance:** Usually associated with prematurity. These babies are vulnerable and typically need an extended stay in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

Low Birth Weight (LBW)

**Weight Range:** 1,500 g to 2,499 g (3 lb 5 oz to 5 lb 8.9 oz)

**Significance:** This is the most common low weight category. While some full-term babies fall here, it’s often linked to prematurity or restricted growth. Careful monitoring is necessary.

Normal Birth Weight (NBW)

**Weight Range:** 2,500 g to 4,000 g (5 lb 8 oz to 8 lb 13 oz)

**Significance:** Represents the ideal range for a healthy full-term infant, correlating with lower risks of health complications after birth.

Macrosomia (High Birth Weight)

**Weight Range:** More than 4,000 g (Greater than 8 lb 13 oz)

**Significance:** Often referred to as “Large for Gestational Age.” Can increase the risk of complications during delivery for both mother and baby. May be linked to gestational diabetes.
