Cat Body Condition Score

Assess your cat’s health by selecting the description that best fits.

Keeping feline companions at ideal weights ensures they lead vibrant, active lives. Monitoring physical shape helps prevent issues linked to excess fat or muscle loss. Use these guidelines to assess your furry friend’s current status by sight and touch.

Assessing Ribs and Waist

Place both hands on your pet’s ribcage. In a fit animal, you should feel ribs easily under a thin layer of fat, similar to feeling knuckles on a flat hand. If ribs are buried under thick padding, weight reduction might be necessary. Viewed from above, look for an hourglass silhouette. A straight or bulging line from shoulders to hips indicates over-nutrition.

Profile and Tummy

Observe your pet from the side while they stand on a level surface. A slight upward curve behind the ribs—often called an abdominal tuck—is a sign of lean fitness. A sagging belly or a “swinging” pouch often suggests surplus deposits. While some breeds have primordial pouches, these should feel like loose skin rather than firm, heavy tissue.

Importance of Lean Mass

Strong muscle tone supports joints and metabolic function. Regular play sessions combined with precise portion control maintain this balance. Adjusting food intake based on activity levels prevents gradual increases that can strain a small frame. Staying proactive about physical proportions fosters longevity and keeps every jump or sprint effortless.
